My lifestyle includes disruptive patterns of sleep as well as stresses which disrupt normal sleep patterns. In other words, I frequently spend the night in the hospital where sleep is difficult to come by and I sometimes experience some level of insomnia at home when things are hectic at work during the day. This is likely the case for many physicians. I recently acquired the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach in an attempt to improve my health through improvement in sleep. On this page, I will attempt to chronicle my experience for anyone interested in such a pursuit.
One day a google ad for The Zeo Personal Sleep Coach appeared on my blog probably as a result of multiple posts about sleep deprivation, call room hair, and insomnia. I was intrigued. Is it possible that there's something that I don't know about getting a better night's sleep?! I love to sleep! and I love it when I wake up in the morning with that exhilerating feeling that comes with the perfect night's sleep. So I checked it out.
On their site, I read about the Zeo and was absolutely fascinated. A lightweight and comfortable headband surverys your brainwaves in order to determine what phase of sleep you are in. It transmits the data to a console which records it for later review. The science geek in me became very excited. The sleep enthusiast in me became obsessed! I must try this amazing technology!
I got my Zeo in the mail two days after a 24 hour shift. I was still a little sleep deprived. I was psyched! The headband was light weight, comfortable, and easy to use. The alarm clock was equipped with pleasant sounding alarms that gradually increase in volume if not tended to. When I plugged it in, the screen read "the more you know, the better you sleep". I spent some time familiarizing myself with the features including the "smart wake" feature (the alarm goes off during a 30 minute window before the time that you set when the headband senses a light level of sleep so as to wake you in a more gentle fashion). I fell asleep that night with no problem and slept very well.
In the morning I awoke feeling a refreshed, like I slept pretty well, but like I would definitely like to go back to sleep. I popped the SD card from the console and took it to my office to upload it to the website. My ZQ (a sleep score that is based on amount of time spent sleeping, REM and Deep Sleep, and wakefulness) was 80 (average for someone my age is 80) hmmm... nice to see that when I'm getting "catch up sleep" I get the average for people my age. Here's how it broke down :
Total time spent sleeping : 6 hrs, 50 minutes
Time to fall asleep : 26 minutes
Time in Deep Sleep : 1 hr, 20 minutes
Time in REM Sleep : 1 hr, 34 minutes
Times awakened :3
This is just a few of the tidbits of information that I was able to review. This seemed promising. Lots of opportunity to positively impact my quality of sleep.
