Circumcision is a controversial topic these days. While many parents choose to have their sons circumcised for cosmetic, hygienic, or religious reasons there really is no good evidence that the procedure provides any real medical benefit. Those in the anti-circumcision camp refer to it as "genital mutilation" and there has recently been media coverage of angry young men who are lashing out at their parents over the unjust loss of their foreskin as a baby.
I bring the topic up because recently one mother with somewhat limited mental ability wished to have her son circumcised. Unfortunately the procedure was not appropriate for him due to a defect in anatomy. The mother was very upset. When questioned as to why she was so upset, she replied that it was because "the devil is in the penis". She went on to state that she knew because her first husband had "the devil in his penis". I won't go into the discussion of religion that followed. I'll leave it at saying that the nurse practitioner did the best she could.
