Busting at the Seams

I work in a busy NICU with level three neonatal care. We do everything but ECMO (cardiopulmonary bypass) and open-heart surgery. Due to continued growth in our area and continued increase in premature birth in the state, we have been running between 50-60 patients daily in the unit for quite sometime. In August we're expanding to 80 NICU beds!
I worked every night except for Tuesday last week, and this week I'm the Tuesday night relief. Tonight I feel as if I live in this unit. I'm not saying it in a negative way necessarily. It's just that after so many nights with so many babies you get an odd sensation that it's not "the call room bed", but "my bed". Your nightly routine becomes more routine, more comfortable. "Oh, baby so-and-so, yeah I know him... he does that every night." You see, the babies have their routines too. Anyway, just some random thoughts about spending multiple nights in the big NICU. Now off to my bed, bag of peanut M&Ms and a book I've been reading for the last week.
