Call Room Hair

Many people (including all of the members of my practice) approach the problem of what to do about one's hair when sleeping in the hospital in a very particular way. There are two main schools of thought on the subject. The first maintains that one should always look their best and, therefore, at the least will drag a comb through their hair before exiting the call room to enter the unit. At the extreme, those that follow this philosophy will get a haircut just before their week of night call so that the coif is low maintenance when leaving the call room.
I subscribe to the second school of thought which postulates that the more unkempt the hair is when appearing in the unit, the more sympathy is generated for the poor soul who's head it adorns. This can be a very important point particularly when interacting with those coming on in relief in the morning. I find that no one ever feels the need to hold me up when the time has come for me to head to the house in the morning, and believe me, that can go a long way for one's mental health!

  1. LOL! One of our Neo's will say "Sorry for the bad breath but YOU guys called ME!" which always makes us laugh.

  2. Yeah, that's also an issue! I usually ask how fast I need to get up there... everyone knows I'm asking if I have time to brush my teeth! LOL
